Garden irrigation: speeding up valve box installation

Designing the valve box setup is key to the efficiency of a garden irrigation system. With Irritec solutions, solenoid valves, filters, fittings and shut-off valves can be installed in an orderly and efficient way inside valve boxes.

Garden irrigation system: getting started the right way

In residential and professional landscape irrigation systems, designing the valve box station area is just as crucial as water distribution in the field. This is where solenoid valves, filters, shut-off valves and fittings are concentrated – components that determine system reliability, maintenance requirements and overall installation quality.

For installers, however, this design node is often one of the most operationally critical stages. Limited space, compressed installation timelines and the need to ensure future accessibility make assembling the valve group an activity that can significantly affect both costs and overall efficiency.

In recent years, the growing adoption of modular systems and integrated solutions has opened new possibilities: creating compact, orderly and quickly installable areas without compromising system quality or robustness.

The control station: the operational core of the system

In an automated irrigation system, solenoid valves divide the system into independently managed irrigation zones. This segmentation allows for:

  • differentiated scheduling for areas with different water requirements
  • efficient pressure and flow management
  • reduced water waste
  • targeted maintenance interventions

The visual quality of the garden benefits as plants grow more evenly, display richer colors and are less exposed to water stress. Maintenance is also reduced, as consistent water supply improves soil structure and limits weed development.

Concentrating valves in a single location – through manifolds and valve boxes – simplifies monitoring and reduces system complexity. However, the physical organization of this space must account for several factors:

  • accessibility for maintenance and inspections
  • protection of components
  • assembly time

It is precisely this last aspect where installers can achieve significant optimization.

Operational challenges during assembly

Traditional construction of a control station requires:

  • manifold assembly
  • use of multiple fittings
  • sealing with PTFE tape
  • dimensional adaptations of the valve box

These operations inevitably lead to increased installation time, a higher risk of leaks, greater space requirements and more difficult future maintenance. Reducing these steps translates into tangible advantages in operational efficiency and overall installation quality.

Irritec irrigation solenoid valves

VTN and VDN garden irrigation solenoid valves – Irritec

The adoption of components designed for simplified integration now allows complete assemblies to be configured within a single valve box while maintaining order and functionality.

Irritec® solenoid valves with manifold integration and swivel union nuts represent a significant step in this direction, enabling fast installation of compact and easily inspectable manifolds.

VDN series solenoid valves

The VDN model integrates two opposing 1” through-flow valves designed for inline installation.

This configuration:

  • combines the reliability of the VPN valve with a central manifold
  • enables serial assembly through simple hand tightening
  • eliminates the need for tools, additional fittings or PTFE tape

Up to six VDN units — equivalent to 12 solenoid valves — can be installed in a PSZ Jumbo valve box while maintaining high functional density. During design, however, it is recommended not to exceed 24 solenoid valves per manifold.

VTN series solenoid valves

VTN solenoid valves integrate a 1” T-connector directly into the valve body, allowing serial assembly with the same operational simplicity:

  • manual assembly
  • no sealants required
  • reduced number of accessory components

This integration accelerates manifold setup and improves construction cleanliness.

Valve boxes for garden irrigation

Valve boxes serve an essential function: protecting equipment from impacts and external agents, ensuring accessibility for inspection and maintenance, and allowing orderly pipe routing without compromising soil or turf stability. They must also withstand surface loads, limit debris ingress and maintain long-term ease of opening and servicing.

Irritec offers a complete range of valve boxes suitable for various installation conditions — from lightweight, quick-install solutions such as the PSZ series with pre-cut openings, to reinforced polypropylene PCZ and POZ lines for more demanding environments, as well as accessories like extensions and versions with integrated water outlets. This variety of formats and configurations allows the most suitable solution to be selected for residential, sports or public green-space systems.

An ideal solution for valves and filter in a single valve box

With VTN and VDN union-type solenoid valves, YEV SWIVEL union filters and PSZ valve boxes with pre-cut outlets, it is possible to build an assembly quickly using a single valve box capable of housing up to eight solenoid valves together with the filter, shut-off valve and compression fittings at each valve outlet.

Speed, order, maintenance

A modular approach — installing all required components, including filters, inside the valve box — provides tangible benefits.

Installation speed

  • fewer components
  • fewer operations
  • tool-free assembly
  • fewer joints

Simplified maintenance

  • easier access
  • clear component layout
  • quick cleaning

These aspects directly affect perceived work quality and the economic sustainability of the intervention.
