Drip irrigation for gardens: everything you need to know in 2026

A reliable garden irrigation system requires the right products and smart choices. This article explores how Irritec helps homeowners and professionals design and install a modern, efficient drip irrigation setup.

Garden irrigation: where to begin

A thriving garden, well-kept flowerbeds or even a small green corner on a terrace or balcony can bring daily pleasure. A healthy, vibrant outdoor space enhances your home, makes living areas more welcoming and contributes to overall wellbeing. But achieving consistent results doesn’t depend only on plant selection or soil quality: water, and how it is delivered, is always the key factor.

Modern, sustainable and automated irrigation systems have therefore become essential. They save time, reduce water consumption and ensure plants receive a steady, controlled supply of moisture, even in the hottest months or when you’re away. Among all available technologies, drip irrigation is by far the most efficient and sustainable: it delivers water directly to the root zone, minimizing waste, evaporation and overwatering.

Within drip irrigation, two main approaches are used: surface drip irrigation, which is simple and easy to install, and subsurface drip irrigation, ideal for larger gardens or for those who want a fully integrated and invisible system. Both offer similar benefits but meet different needs.

This guide provides a complete overview to help you choose the most suitable solution for your green space — whether you prefer a DIY installation or a professional setup.

Benefits of drip irrigation in the garden

Drip irrigation is designed to release water slowly, evenly and in small quantities. This prevents waste and ensures consistent hydration, reducing evaporation and avoiding waterlogging. It is ideal for flowerbeds, vegetable gardens, hedges, ornamental plants and pots — and is becoming increasingly popular for private gardens due to its flexibility and efficiency.

From an aesthetic point of view, the garden visibly benefits: plants grow more uniformly, colors appear richer and stress from irregular watering is significantly reduced. Maintenance is easier too, as steady moisture improves soil structure and limits weed growth.

Surface drip irrigation: simple, versatile and DIY-friendly

Surface systems are the most common in home gardens. Pipes run above ground — often along the edges of flowerbeds or under mulch — feeding drippers or dripline that deliver water precisely where it is needed.

They are highly versatile and suitable for small, medium and large gardens, balconies, terraces and family vegetable plots. Their biggest advantage is flexibility: the layout can be adjusted at any time, new lines can be added and drippers can be replaced easily. This makes the system ideal for those who often rearrange plants or want a customizable irrigation setup without construction work.

Compared to other methods, surface drip irrigation requires a modest investment and offers easy, immediate maintenance, as all components remain accessible.

DIY garden irrigation: where to start

Installing a DIY drip irrigation system for gardens, terraces or balconies is easier than it seems. Irritec kits offer the most intuitive solution: they include all components — pipes, connectors, drippers and fittings — allowing you to create a stable, modular and ready-to-use system.

Professional systems for residential and public green areas

For larger, more complex areas or for high-value outdoor spaces, a professionally designed irrigation system is recommended. In these cases, the goal is not only water efficiency but also system durability, aesthetic quality, balanced flow distribution and advanced zone management.

A professional drip irrigation system typically includes:

  1. Main polyethylene pipe (durable and easy to handle)
  2. Dripline or adjustable drippers (ensuring each plant receives the right amount of water)
  3. Various fittings (elbows, tees, straight connectors)
  4. Water filter (essential to prevent clogging)
  5. Electric valves (to control water flow automatically)
  6. Electronic controller/timer (recommended for full automation and optimization)

Landscape designers and installers working with direct support from Irritec technicians ensure that each system is tailored to the real needs of the garden, reducing water use and limiting future interventions. Irritec is always available to assist with component selection, system design and technical guidance.

Standard vs pressure-compensating dripline

Pressure-compensating dripline offers important advantages and is recommended whenever runs exceed 20 meters or when the terrain is sloped. Its integrated dripper delivers the same flow regardless of pressure variations, meaning plants located close to or far from the water source receive the same amount of water.

By ensuring uniform delivery, this technology promotes healthier plant growth, reduces the need for plant protection products and significantly lowers water consumption.

Another key benefit is energy efficiency: pressure-compensating dripline operates from as low as 0.5 bar, allowing the use of smaller pumps and reducing overall operating costs.

Subsurface drip irrigation: efficiency and invisibility

For larger gardens or those seeking a fully integrated solution, subsurface drip irrigation is the best option. Here, water flows through buried dripline installed at a controlled depth, reaching the root zone directly.

This system is invisible, protected from weather and extremely durable. It offers maximum water efficiency by virtually eliminating evaporation. Its uniform distribution makes it ideal for lawns, complex gardens and public green areas.

However, proper design is essential: soil type, line spacing, emitter flow and pressure must all be evaluated. For this reason, large or high-value gardens should rely on qualified installers or Irritec specialists for tailored solutions.

Installing a subsurface system in your garden

For lawn irrigation, dripline is typically buried at 12–15 cm, with 30–33 cm spacing between emitters and between rows. In such installations, dripline with anti-siphon systems (e.g., Multibar® F a.s.) or root-resistant technology (Multibar® C Rootguard®) is particularly suitable.

Specialist installation is strongly recommended: parameters such as flushing points, air-release valves on high spots, correct manifolds and other technical configurations must be planned carefully to ensure a long-lasting, efficient system.

Automatic irrigation: the controller

Managing irrigation duration requires precision, and today this is easier than ever thanks to smart, remote-controlled systems.

Wi-Fi controllers allow full automation. By connecting to local weather stations, the controller receives daily climate data — temperature, humidity, wind — and automatically adjusts irrigation times based on actual plant needs.

This ensures a garden that is irrigated efficiently without waste.

Electric valves: the core of automation

When a garden is divided into zones — due to limited flow or differing needs such as lawn, hedges, beds or shaded areas — a group of electric valves becomes essential. These valves open and close water flow automatically, following the controller’s programming.

Irritec VDN, VTN, VMN, VPN/VBN and VLN/VSN valves are designed for reliability, ease of installation and long service life. Installing them inside a valve box (such as the PSZ Jumbo) protects the system and ensures tidy, unobtrusive maintenance.

Irritec’s rotating-ring design allows quick assembly of compact manifolds.

  • The VDN model includes two 1″ opposing valves that can be installed in sequence.
  • The VTN model integrates a built-in manifold, allowing easy in-series installation.

VDN valves combine VPN performance with a central manifold — a unique innovation. Thanks to the 1″ rotating ring, VDN valves can be assembled by hand, without tools, extra fittings or Teflon. A PSZ Jumbo box can host up to 6 VDN units (12 valves); more than 24 valves per manifold are not recommended.

VTN valves also feature a 1″ threaded ring for in-series installation without tools.

Valves can be connected to a mains-powered controller or to IP68 battery-powered controllers suitable for installation inside valve boxes exposed to potential flooding.

Designing an irrigation system

When it comes to very complex or large green spaces — especially in high-end, landscape or heritage settings, as well as urban green areas — it is essential to rely on specialised designers and installers.
Before moving on to the operational phase, professionals will carefully assess a number of key factors, including:
  • water source

  • available flow rate and pressure

  • soil characteristics and terrain morphology

  • the water requirements of individual plants

  • exposure to sun and wind

  • size of the areas to be irrigated

  • colours and overall landscape design

Based on the available connections, the designer will also determine whether an electric-powered or battery-operated automation system is required. Once all the possible options for the specific context have been evaluated, the technician will select the most suitable components for installing a drip irrigation system.
